The Byrd Amendment - Protecting the Constitution

The Byrd Ammendment to the Iraq War Powers Act before the Senate reitterates the constitutional authority of the Congress which have the sole power to wage war, and calls into account the administration for establishing clear and present danger.

Source: TheTip, 2002-10-10

Candidate: Robert Byrd

The Iraq War Powers Act before the Senate would allow the President sweeping authority to make war whenever he pleases and in whatever manner he pleases, taking away one of the essential checks and balances provided in the constitution.

Senator Byrd's ammendment makes two points:

1) That the power to make war, declare war, and assign resources to the war rests solely on the congress.

and

2) That the use of force is not authorized unless there is immediate, immanent danger to the US, it's territories, people or armed forces.

Senator Byrd also pointed out that the US continues to act without the support of the United Nations and thus continues to make enemeis abroad while it could be making friends.

on december 8, 1941 president f.d.r. asked the men
of congress to declare war on japan. this is one
instance of a president not exercising his
"comander in chief" option and in which the fate
of the nation rested upon the many elected
delegates in congress. w. bush abused his rights
as the president and raged war on iraq without any
submission from any other from of authority.

i fully concur with mr. byrd. we could have used
other means to depose saddam that would not have
destroyed so many people. and my government
helped put saddam in power and armed him. and
also gave approval to his intention to invade
kuwait. statements by april glaspie are on file.
my government appears to have lured saddam into a
trap. any sane person must ask themselves
why?

furthermore, most americans should
be totally concerned that our jobs appear to be
going to other countries such as china, india,
bangladesh and even vietnam? yes vietnam! nile
shoes from vietnam. walmart cashews from vietnam.
baseball caps from vietnam. trade deficit with
vietnam increase daily. so why did we kill over 2
million of those people?

yes. the man of the kkk party is going to save
the constitution. notice how he chose the
democratic party...

the president is
the commander-in-chief. giving all that power to
congress is actually contrary to the constitution.
what if there is an immediate danger
to...britain. should we not align ourselves with
them? i don't think we need the kkk telling us
how to interpret the constitution.
