Impeach George Bush

Merry Christmas - Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons.

In the Southern California Labor Lockout where Albertsons, Vons and Ralphs have joined forces, apparently illegally, to bust the grocery-workers union. CEO Larry Johnson apparently hasn't heard from the voice of Christmas Future.

Candidate: Big Business

Union Busting is the standard during Republican leadership cycles. Reagan did it, Bush did it, Nixon did it, Ford did it. I know you see a pattern.

Unions are what prevent large business interests from literally enslaving workers both in the United States and abroad. Their fair-labor rules including the 40-hour work week, the overtime laws, the child-labor laws, the paid leave laws, are among the things that make America possible as a dream - where someone can work and live and prosper without having been born with a million dollars or more.

But this is not the vision of Safeway, Vons and Albertsons. Their vision is slave labor, where they can pay people as little as they want, make them work as much as they want, not provide for health care or maternity leave, and fire people at will.

That's a natural desire for a brutal capitalistic organization for whom profit is more important than people.

That three companies - Albertsons, Vons and Ralphs - are pooling resources in
order to attempt to weather the storm is just foul play. In fact, it's against the anti-trust laws that are meant to ensure competition between competitors, not collaboration. That this is being allowed to happen and was timed so nicely with the incoming Republican Governor "The Terminator" is no cooincidence. The attorney general, who works for the Governor, has no mandate to prevent the kind of thing that's going to keep thousands of workers families from having presents for their kids this Christmas.

Bah Humbug.

On the other hand.

Safeway is definitely losing. I was there the wednesday before thanksgiving just to see. I visited three Safeways and three Vons stores (Ralphs was being un-picketed in a suprising move by the unions). According to the picketers, no more than 4 turkeys had been sold at each store all day (4 was the most!). And having walked the aisles, there were less than 6 actual customers in the stores at any particular time - THE DAY BEFORE THANKSG
IVING.

What does this mean? Where did they all go?

Whole Foods and Trader Joes were PACKED so tightly that they had to rent spillover parking lots!

Bottom Line

This Christmas while you're out buying that ham or goose or duck or turkey or tofurkey remember that Larry Johnson, the CEO of Albertsons is making $12.2 Million Dollars a year - that's the salaries of around 500 of the employees that are striking - and he's not the only one.

His children and grandchildren will recieve cars and trust funds and toys and anything their little hearts desire this christmas. The worker's who have been locked out of his grocery stores and the stores of his supposed competitors will be lucky to get cards and candy this year.

i have been an albertsons journeyman clerk for
almost 11 years and i really support all the
employees down in southern california because my
contract negotiations are coming up and the
employees are fighting for my rights also and to
make sure they have a good contract and it is only
fair that they get a good contract because we do
not want our employers to take away for what we
have earned so hard while working for the
company.as an albertons employee who has worked
for the company for 11 years i am not going to let
them take away my health benefits or have them cut
my wages or even try to cut my pension plan.it is
not fair that the company cries boo-hoo.they think
they are losing money but they are not and they
try to want the employees to pay more for their
health benefits.that's so wrong!!!iwish the
employees the best of luck on receiving a brand
new contract. in solidarity!!!!
