![]() Impeach George Bush Fox News vs Al Franken Not a huge story, but one worth mentioning as, according to Fox News, if they can be believed, there are a lot of people watching, perhaps, even believing, what they purport to be "Fair and Balanced" news. By their own admission, however, Fox News is clearly just the opposite. Source: Tept01, 2003-08-14 Candidate: Judiciary First off - be sure to buy Al Franken's "Lies and the Lying Liars That Tell Them" when it becomes available next month. Its sure to be a great read. That said, if anyone missed the Al Franken/Bill O'Reilly Face Off on C-SPAN last month, they missed some of the best entertainment on the Political Stage in quite a while. O'Reilly was one of a panel of journalists that included Franken and my personal favorite, Molly Ivins. O'Reilly was clearly out classed. Not because O'Reilly can't debate Franken. But because without O'Reilly's "mute" switch to control his opponents, he's just not as good a debater as he would have the world beleive. O'Reilly never misses an opportunity to bash his opponents, often calling them liars. But it seems that O'Reilly lied himself, about having received a particular prestigious journalism award. Franken wondered about the accuracy of O'Reilly's claim and checked on it. He discovered that O'Reilly had indeed NOT received that particular award and called O'Reilly to correct him. O'Reilly denied his error, but in the end had to agree he had mispoke. Only he refused to correct himself. That's when things got heated up. And that's why O'Reilly made the cover of Franken's book of "Lies and the Lying Liars that Tell Them." When Franken confronted O'Reilly, he blustered about Franken's impudence, but could not deny his accuracy. It seems Fox News is much more concerned with its IMAGE of "Fair and Balanced" than BEING accurate in its reporting. Well, AOL has a forum on the subject. And I came across this interesting piece. I thought readers and viewers might be interested: "Fox News recently argued in an appeal case that there is no law, rule or regulation against deliberately lying or distorting television news. "This was a response to a previous lawsuit where a reporter (Jane Akre) was fired because she refused to air a news story that she had documented to contain false information. "She had been pressured by Fox management to air this story and was fired when she would not. "She sued under federal whistleblower laws and was awarded $425,000 by a jury in the state of Florida. "This was promptly appealed by Fox and the verdict and award was overturned. "The court found that as Fox had argued, there really is no law, rule or regulation that prohibits lying or distorting of news by a TV news organization, so no whistleblower protection would apply to the journalist. "This appeal was handed down on Feb. 19, 2003. So while the ignorant continue to insist that Fox news is fair and balanced, Fox management and lawyers fight for their rights to continue to lie and distort. "Fox did not even try and convince anyone that the news reporter was wrong in her assertions that she was pressured to air a fraudulent story, only that Fox was within it's rights as her employer to force her to lie on TV, because lying and distorting TV news is not illegal. "The amazing thing is that the appeals court agreed with FOX. "I would have thought that the above court finding would have put to rest forever the myth of fair and balanced, let alone accurate news reporting by the FOX network. "THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS FOX NEWS LIES AND DISTORTS, AND HAS ADMITTED IT IN A COURT OF LAW. "But many ignorant people continue to believe in FOX with all their hearts because they pay no attention to actual news, they just love the propaganda being dished up daily and presented as fact by FOX news." User Originated Comments: From: Thinker 2004-03-17 23:57:38 "fair and balanced"? far from it. how could we trust hannity and his ultra-right colleagues who had gone on and on last year, ferrociously attacking at their guest speakers and create the impression of wmds really existing in iraq? watching them is very telling: it's the blind leading the blind! From: Murph 1999-11-30 00:00:00 o' reilly is a modern day morton downey jr. the new mouth that roared. he conducts his show with little regard for civility. his is a tv version of talk radio where they take a capsule look at a problem, ie: a welfare receipient caught in a fraud, they make it seem that everyone is likewise involved, and want to dismantle the whole system. From: Linda 2003-11-19 11:50:34 i've gone a step beyond. i don't want fox at all. not the news channels, not the entertainment channels. and you know what? i don't miss a thing. i don't care who joe millionaire likes or weds. ive been to orange county, and besides knotts berry farm, you can keep it. and none of the pundits have anything sane to add to any discussion. its not that i've boycotted fox, its just that they add nothing to my life. From: 1999-11-30 00:00:00 i've only witnessed o'reilly's commentary once for about 15 minutes, because that was all i could stomach. personally, i would cl-ssify him among the scourge (which followed bush into office) of sans vaseline, figurative sodomizers, persons who enjoy violating others by orally and verbally shutting them down, outing and/or debasing them via their social and/or economic status and/or their usurpation of the legal system or political office. those who enjoy and follow them also practice figurative sodomy via the protection provided by their idols. i always find myself shuddering at the thought of the probable victims in the personal lives of those people; because in my mind, to enjoy violating people in a figurative sense is only one step away, if that, from physical abuse. i’m sickened every time i see that contemptuous sneering ‘smile’ on bush’s face, that says he’s just violated and done someone in (like the purported skull and bones branding (yes, as in cattle) he’s said to have engaged in). that same contempt is always apparent during those rare times he addresses his ‘employers,’ which would be us citizens. do you recall the psychotic looking sneer giggles he kept directing towards the democrats during his last state of the union address? this pestilence of figurative sodomizers reminds me of the book and movie, “the lord of the flies.” bush has the conch. From: MARY 1999-11-30 00:00:00 i won't read any more of bill o'reilly's books (i read one of his earlier books) nor will i watch him on his television show. i do not enjoy watching someone who is rude, ignorant, and disrespectful to his guests. he interrupts them and doesn't give his guest a chance to answer, especially if he doesn't agree with him or her. in my opinion, the man is deranged, especially after seeing his performance with al franken. |
