![]() Impeach George Bush Arthur Anderson Gets $10 Billion Security Contract Bush Gives Contract to Tax Traitor/Campaign Donor President Bush has said he wants to “make sure that the system is fair for those of us who do pay taxes” and that “we want everybody paying their fair share.”1 But yesterday, the president went out of his way to lavish a massive government contract on a major campaign contributor,2 even though it specifically moved operations offshore to avoid paying U.S. taxes. Source: Media Matters, 2004-06-03 Candidate: Big Government According to news reports, the Bush administration yesterday gave a $10 billion contract(3) for the Department of Homeland Security to Accenture (formerly Arthur Andersen). You remember Arthur Anderson of ENRON fame! It was the Arthur Anderson accounting firm that devised the scheme to move profits and losses around ENRON's books in order to conceal the fact that the giant energy company was actually losing more money than it could possibly sustain. Eventually, the giant collapsed under its own debt weight, leaving millions of investors empty-handed and thousands of employees without pensions and 401K contributions in the largest bankruptcy in American history. Arthur Anderson chose to not allow the FERC access to its books and instead opted to change its name in order to coneal its dirty-dealing business practices. Despite the company having recently moved its official headquarters to Bermuda to avoid U.S. taxes.(4) The huge contract was awarded less than two years after the White House and its allies in Congress gutted a House-passed provision that would have banned awarding homeland security contracts to corporations who exploit tax loopholes, move offshore, and avoid U.S. taxes.(5) At the time, Accenture lobbied to eliminate the provision,(6) hiring GOP political consultant “and Bush family confidant” Charlie Black to lobby on its behalf.(7) Accenture executives have given President Bush more than $68,000 in campaign contributions(8) since 2000. Of course, the president has made a practice of paying lip service to the problem of corporate tax evasion, while actively opposing solutions behind the scenes. ABC News reported that when Congress was considering bills to curb the practice in 2002, Bush “said the Bermuda loophole should be closed” but refused to support “any of the bills that would do so”(9) and then allowed his allies to kill the legislation. User Originated Comments: From: meathead 2004-06-14 07:13:46 hippy guy- pull your head in mate. that is such a lame attempt at witty humor. its infantile schoolboy bigotry. the saddest most pathetic thing about it, is that you cant see what an idiot you are, you actually think you're funny. what a stupid wanker! thick cunt. now is that liberal or libertarian wankstain? From: 2004-06-10 14:25:33 it's unclear who at andersen was "responsible" for the enron scandal. it's clear that anderson consulting (at the time) was a major player at enron - just not the tax player. that andersen consulting and arthur andersen at the time were still playing "on the same team" is questionable, except that they were definitely playing on the team of enron. From: 2004-06-09 22:09:28 "everything they do stinks, and the devils ....well , it is best that they just go." From: Unelect him 2004-06-04 21:33:10 no linda; sadly accenture had nothing to with enron; the enron scheme was hatched by andersen, enron higher ups, and vinson and elkins ( enron' law firm) andersens demise was a result of the deletion of one line of one email that was sent from one andersen partner to another. that deleted email became the obstruction of justice nail in the coffin for andersen and thats why the jury found them guilty. andersen did shred lots of enron documents but in the end it was that one email that undid a firm that was 89 years old and employed 90,000 people worldwide (23,000 of us in the united states)it is no longer acceptable for an auditing firm to act as a business consultant to the same client; hence the spin off of companies like cap gemini (ernst and youngs consulting organization) bearingpoint (kpmgs consulting arm) and deloitte consulting the spin off from the firm of deloitte touche thomatsu. andersen was the first to create and spin off a business consulting division (andersen consulting which later became accenture) it is now the largest outsourcing firm in the world and interestingly enough, will probably outsource billions of dollars in jobs to foreign subsidiaries in order to "secure our borders" they certainly won't do it with amercian workers |
