![]() Impeach George Bush Power - Diversifying your Portfolio Globally Ever since the demise of feudalism, the annoying need for the powerful to gain the willful support of the people has been a thorn in the side of politicians. But the WTO may have solved that problem. Source: TheTip, 2002-09-12 Candidate: WTO The idea of a global government who leaders are unelected and whose support itself comes from legal arrangements unapproved by democratic means makes politicians salivate. The problem with democracy is that people have to vote for you, and sometimes to get them to vote for you, you have to try to please them (sometimes...). But the WTO puts an end to all of that. The WTO is a legislative body, capable of levying taxes, tariffs, establishing monetary policy, trade relationships, etc. It's officials are appointees of major Industrial Institutions and governments, none of which are elected. The first major episode of international tariffs being enforced by the super-governmental force was the $4 Billion Dollar Steel tariff put on US Steel as retaliation for anti-competetive American policy. If we let this kind of thing go on, we could quickly find ourselves unable to control our own borders. It works a lot like grade-school. If you have two friends, and they disagree, no one can make a move. If you have three friends, two can gang up on the one, if you have two sets of three friends (and you're a fourth) you can use one set of friends to gang up on the other. If you can get lots of unrelated groups of friends to be your friend, but not each other's, you can squash any opposition. The problem is, then you're not really a friend to any of your friends, and if they start to figure that out, you've got some backpeddling and explaining to do. It is essential that we require our government to represent us, the citizens of the United States of America. That is their elected role. Any sign of them using another country to coerce us here at home is a symptom of Diversifying the Powerbase. To the extent that our elected officials don't need to react to their electorate's desires (including the need to listen carefully), we are losing control. We can do some simple things about it. First, it's necessary to make sure that our elected officials know what we want. The many country-wide anti-WTO demonstrations should have been sufficient to make that point. Second, we need to let them know that we know that they know - VOTE. TheTIP will be tracking WTO supporters right next to big-spenders. Add a comment to this Message in our Forums.
