![]() Impeach George Bush Zell Miller Senator Zell Miller's decided to not run again for the Senate in 2004. Thank Goodness Source: The TIP, 2003-11-29 Candidate: Democratic Party Zell Miller is one of a vanishing breed. A Post-Civil War Southern Democrat. Let's be clear. Following the Civil War, Republicans - the Party of Lincoln - couldn't be elected south of the Mason-Dixon Line if the Life of the Union depended on it. The memory of Lincoln, anti-slavery, anti-states rights northern-eastern Republicans and the post war Carpetbaggers lingered for 100 years. Those Republicans dominated the Republican Party until the 1964 Presidential election when Senator Barry Goldwater (R-AZ) ran for President and created what he called the "Southern Strategy." The Republican Party made a seismic shift to "States Rights" With the passage and enforcement of the Civil Rights laws under the Democratic Congress and Presidents, States Rights became a code word for Segregation and the Republicans began their March to the Sea. Imagine, David Dukes, that Mississippi Rebel, ran for Congress as a Republican - the Party of Lincoln! Thus, Zell Miller, one of only 3 Southern Democrats left in Washington, is a vanishing beed. As he leaves Congress, Miller just wrote a book. His thesis is the Democrats are ignoring 1/3 of the people in the nation - the Southerners. I'd like to dispute that number. Fully half of the population of the South are women. Republicans don't represent women and Rush Limbaugh's characterization of women as "Femi-Nazis" is uncontrovertible testimony to that fact. At least 20% of the population of the South are men and women of color. The only Republican congressman of color left office two years ago and has not been heard from since. And a growing number of Hispanic people are likewise not represented by Republicans - except, of course, the Cuban ex-patriots of Miami. Can it be that all the white men of the south are as stupid as their "Bubba" image? I don't believe it. And can it be that they are blind followers of Jerry Falwell/Pat Robertson? May it never be so! It is far more likely that the typical Southerner is just like the typical Northerner, Easterner or Westerner. They don't vote. More than 60% of us don't vote at all. And those that do vote make the decisions for the rest of us - how we'll be governed and by whom. Add a comment to this Message in our Forums. While you're at it, check out our forums too!
