![]() Impeach George Bush Watching the HenHouse Powerful Politicos on CNN and MSNBC have made serious mis-steps that must force a thinking electorate to ask, "What's really behind this reporting?" Source: TheTIP, 2003-10-04 Candidate: TheTIP The original "cause celeb" of The TIP, Truth in Politics, was to highlight inconsistancies, that is, lies, of politicians: the difference between what they say and what they do...And The TIP has remained true to its calling. There is another player, however, in the politics of America. The Press, be it print or electronic, is an integral part of how Politics is played in America. Beginning when Ben Franklin wrote his offensive against the conservatives of his day - led by President John Adams - the press has a fine and proud, and partisan tradition. There are few rules in this free-for-all. Freedom of the Press isn't taken lightly. And the sanctity of sources is held as dear as the sanctity of the confessional. One rule for journalists is important, however. Journalists are supposed to report the news, not make the news. This week, two political Talking Heads made the news, and in doing so, should be severly reprimanded. Bob Novak, columnist for the Chicago Sun Times and television commentator for CNN exposed a CIA operative. The fact that he was used by Bush Administration Officials to ruin a career Weapons of Mass Destruction expert should have alerted Novak, a seasoned reporter, that something was up. The fact that he took the bait is really evidence of Novak's growing dementia. It's time he retired. But because Novak did bite, the Bush Administration is taking heavy fire, not just from Democrats, but from George Tenet and the CIA as well. After all, if Bush staffers are willing to destroy one operative's career, why not another. And worse than that, the staffers are apparently willing to endanger the security of the United States at a time we are supposed to be at war with those purported to use WMDs. Novak, not willing to leave bad enough alone, made things worse yesterday when he exposed, on air, a clandestine American company used by the CIA for the purpose of gathering intelligence. The CIA will be forced to close the doors on that operation and everyone involved is now at risk. Good night, Mr. Novak. The other incident occurred on Hardball, an MSNBC show hosted by Chris Matthews. Matthews style, like many of his peers, is to scream at the camera and his guests, all the while smiling his boyish grin. Very charming fellow, but apparently he's more charming than wise. And his mouth works faster than his brain. All this week, Matthews has been broadcasting from California, ostensibly covering the recall election. In truth, he's used his show as an hour-long political commercial for his candidate, Arnhold Schwartzenegger. Re-broadcast twice daily, that's three hours of free political ads for the Austrian-born candidate. Matthews rarely mentions Gov. Gray Davis or any of the other leading candidates; he only occasionally mentions Arrianna Huffington, and then, only for contrast. Whether or not Arnold Schwartzenegger is elected California's govenor really doesn't matter much. I'm confident a group of Democrats are already to file recall petitions for any Republican elected. Such is the state of politics in California today. But it was a comment the other night that stopped me in my tracks. As Matthews was going to commercial, he smiled at the camera, pointing like he was Uncle Sam recruiting an army, and warned us that we'd "better learn to sing Edelweiss by Tuesday night." Edelweiss? Edelweiss is the state flower of Austria. Hitler was from Austria. Schartzenegger's father was an Austrian Nazi officer and an admirer of Hitler. Didn't America fight and win World War II so we wouldn't have to learn Edelweiss? Matthews should be ashamed of himself. Charm is no excuse for pisspoor reporting. User Originated Comments: From: Linda 1999-11-30 00:00:00 bush has consistantly posed as a friend of the military. here's what the facts are: one month after president bush greeted soldiers at fort stewart -- home of the famed third infantry division -- as heroes on their return from iraq, approximately 600 sick or injured members of the army reserves and national guard are warehoused in rows of spare, steamy and dark cement barracks in a sandy field, waiting for doctors to treat their wounds or illnesses. the reserve and national guard soldiers are on what the army calls "medical hold," while the army decides how sick or disabled they are and what benefits -- if any -- they should get as a result. hundreds of sick and wounded u.s. soldiers including many who served in the iraq war are languishing in the barracks here while they wait -- sometimes for months -- to see doctors. one document shown to upi states that no more doctor appointments are available from oct. 14 through nov. 11 -- veterans day. "i have loved the army. i have served the army faithfully and i have done everything the army has asked me to do," said sgt. 1st cl-ss willie buckels, a truck master with the 296th transportation company. buckels served in the army reserves for 27 years, including operation iraqi freedom and the first gulf war. "now my whole idea about the u.s. army has changed. i am treated like a third-cl-ss citizen." since getting back from iraq in may, buckels, 52, has been trying to get doctors to find out why he has intense pain in the side of his abdomen since doubling over in pain there. buckels, after waiting since may for a diagnosis, has accepted 20 percent of his benefits for bad knees and is going home to his family in mississippi. "they have not found out what my side is doing yet, but they are still trying," the hapless buckels said. From: sbaggett 1999-11-30 00:00:00 this is not a first for either matthews or novak . |
