Hypocrite, Thy Name is Bush

I'd like to take a minute to give our current situation an historical perspective and give old candidates a chance at Hypocrite of the Week, candidates who pre-dated BuzzFlash and the InternetS.

Travel back with me to Viet Nam.

Lyndon Johnson's culpability for continuing a war he inherited can't be denied. And his lies to expand the war to Cambodia and Laos were exposed in his Presidential papers now widely available. He certainly can be considered first among Presidential hypocrites.

Richard Nixon is a different animal altogether. He actually ran for president on a platform of a "Secret Plan to End the War." A plan that never existed. Six years later, after four students at Kent State were gunned down and killed, after millions of protesters took to the streets, after more than 55,000 Americans died in Asia, and uncounted Vietnamese, young and old, were maimed, murdered, massacred and their country devastated, Nixon "declared victory and left" Viet Nam. There's hypocrisy.

Nixon never did take responsibility for his participation in that war: His expansion of the battlefield: His lies to continue the killing. And when he was forced to resign or be impeached, not for Viet Nam, but for illegal excesses he took as President, he didn't attempt to defend himself. He waved good-bye from the White House lawn and spent the rest of his life trying to rehabilitate himself and his legacy.

Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon saying "Our long national nightmare is over." He was wrong. The American psyche never had the opportunity to work through Viet Nam. Never had a chance to repudiate the presidential excesses Nixon took. So, today, we find ourselves with King George, wrongly comparing Viet Nam to Iraq and foisting the same Unitary Government our Founders so carefully avoided by parsing powers to the three branches of our government, Presidential, Congressional and Judicial. Ford's pardon of Nixon delayed the fight we must win today in order to win again the Democratic government we inherited.

Jimmy Carter was no hypocrite. He sincerely is a Christian man and, I believe, proved why Jesus' Kingdom is NOT of this world. How can the Commander in Chief of the United States "Turn the other cheek?" Carter tried to live his faith in the White House. He has proven to be a Man of God, but not a great president.

Ronald Reagan never was a Man of God or a great president. He was a bookmark. He was cleverly decorated and held his place while others worked around him to rob the nation of its wealth and honor. And when he agreed to testify before the Tower Commission we were appalled to realize just how confused the President of the United States was. The question was, and persists today, who was running the country? Even more shocking was Reagan's testimony before congress' Iran/Contra Hearings when he said "I hope I'm finally going to hear some of the things I'm still waiting to learn." If he didn't know, just who did? Now we know George HW Bush knew.

Yes, Oliver North was in a White House office conspiring with John Poindexter (yes THAT John Poindexter) and arranging to sell weapons to Iran to fund rebels in Nicaragua while using CIA assets to protect cocaine smugglers who were creating and feeding an American market, principally in the poorest ghettos. But Reagan denied any knowledge of the schemes, then admitted he knew of it, but denied the quid pro quo Arms for Hostages. Eventually, Reagan had to admit he authorized the scheme but told Congress "The simple truth is, I don't remember, period."

Twenty years after Ronald Reagan left office and only seventeen years after Reagan announced he suffered from Alzheimer's disease, it is clear that Republican operatives, including then Vice President Bush, must have known how severely limited Reagan's faculties were, and are still trying to rehabilitate his legacy - that of the most indicted administration in American history. The hypocrisy for the Reagan years must extend throughout his family and administration, from top to bottom, and for years after.

George HW Bush's hypocrisy no doubt began while he was still in short pants. His own father, Prescott Bush, while serving in the US Senate, while his own son George was serving in the US Navy fighting Nazi Germany, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany and was finally censured for Trading with the Enemy! Years later, when he ran for president, Bush would resurrect those Nazi connections as campaign donors.

George HW Bush is like Forrest Gump - he was always there at the critical junctures of history. He was RNC chairman during the Watergate scandal of 1972 that eventually forced the resignation of Richard Nixon. He was on Ford's short list to become Vice President, but became the Chief US Liaison with the People's Republic of China before the US opened trade with the country that now holds the mortgage on our nation. I believe it was while Director of CIA under Gerald Ford that Bush made the contacts, and learned the secrets, that eventually catapulted him to national prominence as Vice President to Ronald Reagan.

Bush served as CIA Director during the Church Committee, the last time the CIA saw any oversight or scrutiny from congress. And it was then that his connection with Manuel Noriega becomes public record. Noriega, while President of Nicaragua, was a CIA operative and was paid $110,000 a year from the CIA while he ostensibly worked for the CIA. We know now he was concurrently working for Cuba as a triple agent. It was also revealed by the Church Committee that Bush set up a secret government (sound familiar) and illegal secret funding of the CIA. It was also during this period that Bush became business partners with James Baker in what would eventually become The Carlyle Group, the company that buys and sells war-making arms to both sides of any dispute, thus escalating it and disregarding the human toll, produces more profits for itself at the cost of human lives.

Bush shenanigans in South and Central America and legion. Suffice it to say that if a South or Central American dictator burped, it was George HW Bush that patted him on the back, first. And for every oil deal in the US, there was a Bush involved. Whether Jeb, Neil or George W, hundreds of thousands of dollars flowed into the Bush family coffers while George HW was vice president. Millions would flow when he becomes president.

In 1989, he finally becomes president. Bush grabs the brass ring. Making deals with Middle Eastern potentates, including Saddam Hussein just one year before his Ambassador to Iraq precipitates a war with Iraq, among others. First, he goes to war with Panama for the sole purpose of arresting Manuel Noriega, the man who knew too much. Then Saddam Hussein, the other man who knew too much. The bad backroom deals are too numerous to recount. But do these names and events evoke anything? BCCI, Silverado, S&L collapse, Bahrain, Willie Horton, Tiananmen Square massacre, Harken Oil. No wonder it was "the economy, stupid" that finally cost Bush his office. This son of a traitor is himself a traitor, and along with his wife, Barbara, raised a litter of traitors. As well as hypocrites, for while claiming to be patriots and nice people, they were and are directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans and others around the world.

So much has been written about George W Bush on this website and others, and yet it isn't nearly enough. Another day. Another time.
