![]() Impeach George Bush Blessed Are the Peacemakers I admit it - I'm a cockeyed optimist. Four years ago, as the calendar ticked off the moments to the millennium, my thoughts were "What if...1000 years without a war..." Source: The TIP, 2004-08-06 Candidate: TheTIP I hoped that the world could take a break from the constant warring, the constant warpath we humans have been on for our entire history. Why not? It's not as though war was necessary. We have all the technology we need to see to it that every human can be fed, clothed, educated, employed - there is no shortage of resources on the planet. Not if we take advantage of all the resources at our disposal. That's why I was so upset when the Twin Towers went down. Someone had breached he peace. But our response wasn't etched in stone. A police action, to go after the perpetrators without declaring war, it was possible, it was appropriate. Our president chose a massive invasion of Afghanistan. It wouldn't have been my reaction, but I could understand the political necessity of such a response. It wasn't successful. The people who planned and executed the heinous attack on 9/11 are, three years later, still free, apparently still planning more attacks. The War on Iraq was another matter, however. Iraq was never responsible for the 9/11 attack on America. In fact, Iraq has never attacked the United States. Saddam Hussein, the bloody dictator that he is, had been our ally until GHW Bush manuevered him into attacking Kuwait. The consequences of that very bad idea are clear and recorded in other articles on the site. But this attack, against an unarmed Iraq, there just was no excuse for it. It was a cold blooded attack on a nation, a people, who had done us no harm and were unarmed. If one is to believe the president's most recent rationale for his war, it was an effort to put the people of Iraq in the middle of a War on Terror, a war against the United States, a war with which they had no interest. Today, Iraq is devastated. The Iraqi people are not free. Their country is destroyed. Their government destroyed. Their leadership destroyed. And they exist on the verge of anarchy every day. And it is our fault. That's bad enough. But our own tragedy is a story that has yet to be told. American men and women are dead. Their families are devastated. Their bread winners gone. Who will raise the children of these families. Who will pay for their schools, their clothes, their food, their homes? Who will tuck them into bed, tell them they are safe, kiss them goodnight. And then there are the wounded. Men and women without arms and legs. Devastated lives. Today, on CNN, one such wounded was spotlighted. He is paralyzed from the neck down, blind, brain damaged. His father wanted him to come home, to be cared for by his family. The Army refused to pay for a bed for the veteran. A bed. What have we done. What will we do about it. I'd like to talk to the man in charge. Add a comment to this Message in our Forums. While you're at it, check out our forums too! User Originated Comments: |
